A Guide for Electric Scooter Beginners

Electric scooters are modern transportation solutions that are gaining increasing popularity among users of all ages. Thanks to the support of an electric motor, these single-wheelers offer convenient and eco-friendly ways to get around the city. But what really makes electric scooters so attractive to many people?

What are Electric Scooters?

Electric scooters are a type of single-wheelers that are powered by an electric motor. Unlike traditional scooters, the rider does not need to pedal to gain speed - it’s enough to press the button and start moving. Thanks to the use of electric energy, these scooters are eco-friendly and do not emit exhaust gases, which means a smaller impact on the environment. Equipped with batteries, they can travel from 20 to even over 100 kilometers on a single charge.

Why Choose an Electric Scooter?

Riding an electric scooter brings many benefits. Firstly, it minimizes the emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere, which improves air quality in the city. Secondly, electric scooters are economical - the costs of operation are significantly lower compared to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles, and a long range on a single charge makes them ideal for daily commutes to work or school. Thirdly, they are practical and easy to maintain, and their small size allows for convenient movement in urban traffic, potentially replacing public transportation or allowing for faster travel, for example, to the subway. Lastly, we can store them in our homes, carry them in a backpack, so they can be our additional means of transport that allows us to quickly get from point A to point B.

Which Electric Scooter to Choose?

When choosing an electric scooter, it’s important to consider several key parameters:

1 -> Maximum Speed: For most users, a top speed of 25 km/h is sufficient, but more experienced riders may look for models that achieve higher speeds. Scooters with a top speed of 25 km/h are also available for rent from services like Bolt and Tier. If you already have contact with such services, it’s worth considering whether this speed is sufficient for you, or if you need something more. On the market, you can find electric scooters with speeds of 50, 60, 80, or even 100 km/h.

2 -> Range on a Single Charge: An important parameter, especially if you plan longer trips. Models with a larger battery capacity offer a longer range.

3 -> Charging Time: It’s worth checking how long it takes to fully charge the battery to avoid long breaks between rides. Some scooters can be charged for over 10 hours, so it’s worth considering whether this charging time is acceptable, or if you prefer faster charging.

4 -> Maximum Weight Capacity: Each scooter has a specified maximum weight limit that should be taken into account when choosing a model. It’s important to consider this because a scooter that is too small for a user who is too heavy will have difficulty achieving the declared speeds, and over time, too much weight may damage it.

5 -> Motor Power: The greater the motor power, the better the performance, especially when climbing hills. It’s quite simple and logical, but the question remains: what power will be suitable for me? At first, I would aim for devices with one motor up to 1000W, as we will ride and want an electric scooter for commuting without unnecessary excitement. Then it’s worth considering devices with two motors, as they will provide us with greater comfort during inclines and also give us a larger reserve of power in reserve.

6 -> Tire Size: The size and type of tires also matter. Larger tires provide better grip and handle terrain better. Additionally, there are tires with off-road tread, road tread, or mixed tread. Although the tread can always be changed, the tire size and width are fixed at any given time, so we can change our tires from off-road to road and vice versa.
